where does that stuff fall in the 105-600-dura ace hierarchy?

Machines were mice and men were lions once upon a time, but now that its the opposite it's twice upon a time.

I would put it between 105 and 600. It was Shimmanos attempt at fashion. Kind of a machine age art deco, late eighties hipsterposer kind of thing.

some company use to make something just like this in the early 90's for bmx bikes, they were called pitbull centerpull brakes

Wed, 07/23/2008 - 22:01
jitensha!

not even close. pitbulls were just standard centerpull brakes. campy deltas have a fairly complicated linkage under the shield.

If I get a category upgrade this year, I'm going to buy a new bike and I'll probably be putting those Truvativ Omniums on there.

yea what makes them so superior? are they super aero or something?

Sat, 07/26/2008 - 23:12

I wouldn't say they were "superior". People use them for looks or because they are rare, expensive campy parts. It's kind of like driving an old Alfa Romeo or something similar, it is not going to win any races but it's unique, well built (not all Alfa's fit this) and good looking. Also, as an engineer I commend the attempt at building a better brake. I don't own any deltas and probably never will but that's my take. Oh, and as someone mentioned the deltas were designed to work with a specific rim width, most people use narrower rims unknowingly so braking power is reduced.

i've never heard that about deltas being designed for a certain rim width, but Campy being who they are, it woudn't be surprising if it were true. anyway, they were marketed as a "pure racing" brake when they hit the market, the reasoning being in an actual race barring crashes and whatnot, you only have to come to a full stop at the finish line.

Sun, 07/27/2008 - 16:05

Delta's were more of a speed adjuster than a brake

this point is pretty laughable. it's been proven time and time again that better brakes (in terms of absolute stopping power and modulation) adds spee, and lowers overall time.

except for on all uphill tdf style time trials. where you start at the bottom of a mountain and finish at the top, never losing elevation.
brakes, helmets, most of the gears in the cassette, etc. all useless in such a situation.

biek, I think one of your quote tags is in the wrong place. I agree completely that better brakes are a good thing and I had no intention of starting an argument over the viability or performance of deltas. If you would like to read some relevant material I suggest starting here and here on campyonly.com.

i think all the campy brakes before deltas also, were more a speed adjuster. they aren't meant to flat out stop you in two seconds from 30mph.
maybe the cobalto brakes worked a little better, i don't know. i've never ridden them.
I can tell you that the super record brakes on my road bike don't work near as well the dura ace 7400 i had on another bike.

^ +1 To that. I like the non integrated brake lever shifter pods, but the shifter pods look rather complicated compared to my SRAM pods.

I also never figured out why center-lock was better then a typical 6 bolt pattern.
