Frame:
some huffy mountain bike with all of the crappy looking decals removed

Handlebars and Stem:
whatever huffy put on there. i left the bars bare to give it a 'clean' look

Fork and Headset:
huffy's doing. the fok is a bit bent, so i need to spraypaint another fork black

Front wheel:
26" from a 1967 hercules girl's cruiser, original nylon tires on both wheels

Rear wheel:
26" from a 1967 hercules girl's cruiser with sturmey archer 'TCW III' 3 speed hub w/ coaster brake

Crankset and Bottom bracket:
single piece crankset from a murray mountain bike. original one was bent up. have a red sugino 42 tooth chainwheel on there.

Saddle and Seat Post:
bought a decent seatpost at the lbs, saddle was the one that was on there, i think. too bad it isn't black.

Pedals and Chain:
cheapo platforms with clips and straps, chain is a 1/8"
Cog/Gearing et cetera:
it's a Sturmey Archer TCW III

Notes:
i built this up one weekend 'cause i thought it would be a sweet ride. it's totally ninja.

Is there a shortage of non-wrecked decent bikes where that guy is from or what?

The latest creation from the guy who threw together that ridiculous Colnago for Fixated, then threatened to beat the crap out of people for criticizing it.

Hello, custom painted rim!

Looks like he pre-distressed some of those parts, like scuffing up a new pair of Chucks.

More money than sense, and a can of spray paint. Add in some $5 aftermarket decals, and you've got yourself a fashionable wheel to match your horribly conceived color scheme.

I love broken old abandoned bikes that are kind of just melting into the pavement and being reclaimed by the urban ecology. Here's one of my favorites from my own collection.

Believe it or not, the fat tire bottle was just sitting there when I came across it.

This is the ugliest, most ill concieved Steamroller build I have ever seen!

The extra eight inches of steerer tube+riser stem+moustache bars+highend components makes me want to throw my own steamroller off a bridge just because I know this one is out there somewhere, rolling around the suburbs without a fleck of grease or grime on the mirror finish of those Phils. FUCK!
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go drop a barf.

Talk about the wrong tool for the job. There are dozens of bikes that would likely suit his needs better than a Steamroller. Maybe something that's actually designed to have an upright cockpit.

To keep the moustache bars up high he had to leave it long but would prefer a different solution?

That's not a ridiculous amount of seatpost, but I wouldn't advise anyone to stack their steerer-tube that high. She just needs to cut that shit down and get a positive-rise stem.

It has a positive rise stem. All threadless stems are both positive and negative unless they are 0*, which aren't too common.

It already looks to be about a 17* stem. Maybe a mountain bike stem in 30* or so could get enough rise to cut down some steerer, however, I think it's silly to do so just for aesthetics. It's not like it's a carbon steerer deathtrap.

TimArchyLime
TimArchyLime's picture

The problem is that that is the proper placement for mustache bars. They should be at or just below seat level. Thats why Nitto makes the Technomic stem. It just happens to look like shit on a threadless system.

is it really any worse than when Squid did this?

Of course, no one is saying that Squid is above being jackass.

It is stupid to alter the comfort of a bike simply to make it look better. But a several inches of steer tube sticking out of the top of the headset like that creates a lot of forces that can drastically shorten the life of the headset. I think just about any steer tube could handle it so long as you aren't riding like a dumbass.

You know what I meant when I said "positive rise stem." More positive than the one it has now.

That many spacers on the steerer tube is eventually going to cause the headset to index and possibly make the headtube oblong. It's not for aesthetics, it's for longevity of the bike.
