Roadrunner Bag Sale

Sorry, I know this is in the wrong place, if DumbJim or whoever can delete it in an hour that's great. I didn't want any interested parties to miss it.

Roadrunner Bags has a 420 sale going on for another 28 minutes. It ends at 5:20 pacific time. Discount code is LIT420 for 42% off.

It was a good discount on great USA-made stuff, but it's over now. The cottage manufacturers never do sales.

Someone should delete the thread now

Roadrunner bags suck. Floppy ass weak stitched bullshit. A casual commuter would kill one of his bags in a normal year.

And for the record, I don't smoke weed, but I do love me a flash sale.

You're not fuckin lyin. I smoke weed everyday and I'm not ashamed about it. Yesterday was the 4/20 rally in Denver and (aside from fucking up the one day this month I actually had to take an uber somewhere) they completely trashed downtown. Like, there's news articles about how trashed it is.

eh, guy at voodoo donut was pretty baked and gave me and my friend a bunch of free donuts and coffee because we had to wait for a gigantic leaf donut to get drawn on. The rest of my 4/20 was spent studying for a midterm that night.

I've seen/used quite a few art-is-anal bags and the quality/construction has ranged from meh to very good. Chrome, Mission Workshop, and even Timbuk2 may no longer be cool, but their quality is good and consistent. If you don't mind the lack of organizational amenities, the Ortlieb messenger backpacks are bombproof.

I was on campus all day, and didn't see a single thing happen. And weed was just decriminalized in Mass, you'd think it'd be a field day.

I did hear screeching tires and a huge crash right outside my house. Rode my bike over to see what happened. Right along the major route (116), there was a smashed mailbox on one side of the road and a completely leveled fence on the other side, with deep ruts in the ground. The driver had sped off. A guy who saw it says he almost hit oncoming traffic twice. As is typical of useless fucking bystanders, nobody had called the cops so I did it myself (non-emergency line) and then had to explain to the police that even though 6 people saw it, the person calling wasn't one of them. Annoying.

Anyways, given that this person swerved across oncoming traffic to hit a mailbox, then shifted and reversed across both lanes and 25 feet of grass to go THROUGH a fence, and then went back across the road into a third property before speeding off, I guarantee you they were drunk. Not high, drunk.

You want to talk about damaging substances in the US, alcohol abuse is soooo much worse than weed. I've never felt unsafe in a car with someone who was high. With something like 40,000 local students, 4/20 is a walk in the park compared to Cinco de Mayo or St. Patrick's Day.

Max is pretty cool. Definitely entertaining.

I think it's time to give up my MW messenger bag. I use it to haul my laptop around, but the mile walk to and from the train causes problems with sciatica. Guess I need a backpack.

What's a decent small minimalist backpack that'll hold a 15" laptop, a couple extra pockets, and little else?

Heath,

I've got a ReLoad midpack that I had "custom" made in seattle 12 years ago. It's water resistant, faded, has about 3 pockets, and extra long shoulder straps for men of substance. Their new stuff looks pretty nice, but this is still plugging along, after they fixed the shoulder straps 5 years ago. I'd sell it, but you probably want a new bag.

I got a tool roll from RR like 4yrs ago when they were still an etsy shop. It took over a month to come because they didn't actually have the pink cordura fabric in stock, but didn't indicate that at time of purchase. Also the stitching and finishing was really bad... Maybe the situation has changed.

Ok, so I have this little bag from them, and I actually did pay for this one:

-The front pockets are not very useful. They're sewn so tight that it's pretty difficult to even get a wallet in there. Pens and little stuff get lost in them because you can't get your hand all the way in. So, I stopped using them for those things. Instead I use them for knife/saw/spork when camping, a small notebook the rest of the time.

-The side pockets are much smarter. A little stretch but more durable than mesh. Fits any bottle.

-The inside has a computer sleeve and these two long, narrow sewn-in stretchy pockets. I assume it's for a pump. I stick pens in there hooked over the top edge.

-The outer zipper pocket has literally never been opened, but that's my problem, not the bag's.

-It's the perfect size for a Wald 139.

Shoulder straps and backpanel are comfortable and cool, fit is fine, seems durable, stitching throughout is just fine. Not "Wow! Look at that stitching!" good, just no issues. I use it for coffeeshop work days, it's not getting beat up.

Overall it's kind of a boring bag? Not exciting but it's simple, and I am not gonna get rid of it. During the sale I bought this little sucker, and I am much more excited for this one as a cross-body daily:

Seconding reload. I'd say buy local and get the Freight Rucksack but Travis is a notorious flake and you'll never get the bag. Reload all the way.

Third on Reload. Solid people, solid product. Use their basket bag every day whether its for commuting or longer rides and it's been a great companion.

Also want to chime in and say that I've had a few things from Roadrunner and have been disappointed with all of them. It seems like they've gotten it together a bit more recently but they've left a bad taste in my mouth so cannot support anymore.

At least they say this:

Quote:
If your RR product ever has a problem with the stitching on our part, we will fix it! If we cannot fix it, we’ll send you a new one free of charge.

I don't have a dog in this fight and I don't care about Roadrunner, but I guess in the defense of something made by a real person instead of a robot, I personally kinda like a little mark that someone handmade something, as opposed to machine-perfect stitches. As long as it doesn't affect function. My machine-made bags have stitches that fail, which is something I don't experience on MUSA stuff.

All things equal, the fact that Roadrunner is cheaper than, say, ILE or Trash Bags is an ok compromise for a stitch that went over 1-2mm.

Roadrunner will repair bags....like 4 times because they keep breaking. He just doesn't know how to design a bag to avoid stress points on the stitches. I've heard he's a nice dude but just cannot get past the durability hurdle. And btw he's been making bags for something like 6 years and he's most known for that burrito roll that everyone makes. I make one and it takes me a couple of hours to knock one out with a $50 home sewing machine meant for hemming pants and domestic repairs.

MW bags seem to be decent. Owned and designed by the same dudes that started Chrome. They have their eye on the commuter market so they don't have to worry about longevity or people like us. They're for tech bros.

Trash bags are super durable and made by the nicest guy on the planet but their name describes their wear. They literally sag and droop like you put a fucking trash bag full of dirty diapers on your back. Absolutely no structural design. You have to box out your bag with other items or straight up corrugated plastic to maintain any type of shape. It's really too bad because he's the nicest guy, sews all his own bags, and is all about the community. But holy hell I would never use one of his bags.

Reload is basically perfect. Has kept up to date with the changing trends in the industry while still making bags for the commuter class. Still makes all their bags themselves in the states. If you call the east coast shop Roland will probably answer. If you call the west coast shop Ellie will probably answer. They are the R and the E in R.E.load. They are super supportive of the community and make the best prize bags ever. I can't say enough good things about reload. You should buy a bag from them, you will not be disappointed.

I got plenty of opinions on bags. Ask away.

I dunno about that, I've been using my Vandal for five years now and I can't find so much as a loose stitch. I don't haul heavy stuff every day, but I do often enough. I also like how it's relatively compact then BAM explodes out to carry a body. Instead of having fiddly compression straps all over the outside, you just stuff the expandable bits inside the relatively stiff, shaped outer shell.

For my smaller backpack, I have an Ortlieb Flight. Waterproof, low-slung on hips, metal frame, doesn't block visibility, can hold a bladder, can hold two water bottles on the outside, big enough for me to carry an adult set of clothes. I think it's the best designed backpack for cyclists, and it still works great for hiking or travel.

Oh yeah, and just to be clear, I'm not bashing Trash Bags for being more expensive, they make a cool bag (shop buddy has one of theirs).

I had an ILE Default for two years and routinely pushed it way past its pay grade in terms of weight and biking around hauling other bikes (fatbikes!) on the back using a ton of straps. It never failed. Ended up selling it and upgrading to an even bigger ILE bag which I now use daily. Never a loose thread, never a torn shoulder strap, never needed a repair even though I rail on these things. So I can 100% recommend them (maybe not for real mess work, I don't know what works and what doesn't there).

Like I said, I got the smallest Roadrunner and I am not beating it up. I don't notice any glaring issues at all, but I will now probably not push the weight limit after hearing from Straws. But it's doing fine as a cafe bag.

I did rip right through a Timbuk2 once!

This stings so hard.

I know some of the dudes that went from Chrome to MW. They hooked me up with a couple bags. The bags are well constructed. But there are some differences from my old chrome bag that would piss me off if I carried anything other than my laptop in it. I think I have a Rummy. Load doesn't really ever sit right on my back.

Have a Rambler as well. It hit the pavement at 60mph in a motorcycle crash. I think I flipped over the bars and landed on it. Bent my laptop. It seemed to hold up okay.

Probably should sell all this shit and buy something I like.
