Hayes CX brakes remain criminally under-rated.

spyres are worse than bb7s in plenty of ways

not really better cable pull, even worse stock pads, even tinier bearings, no seals at all, weak assed 'spring', and they're hueg

the only clear feature is the ability to use a barrel adjuster

Seems like CX70s have a better rep, although materially I can't tell you for sure that the ones on my Grinder are giving me more of it than the BB7's on my Rig did. Cable dicks are universally meh in my experience. I'm OK with either of them.

Bought a spencer today. Could not swing an Endpoint. I put up half the parts from the Nature Boy on ebay and they all sold. Once the frame sells I will be at $-50.00 spent on a new spencer.

Trek Crockett frame:

Front wheel is Hope to Stan's Grail 32spoke, 15mm QR. brakes are some shimano ones that one of the Laughing Dog mechanics described as "great." He said the Spyres were garbage. Bottom bracket is a Wheels Mfg converter so I can use my GXP crank.

Reusing the seatpost and cockpit, rear wheel, and tires from the nature boy as well. Still single, still ready to mingle! Saved about... $1200 going this route.

And I love the "Shitty Trek 69er" colorway

i'm buying the same frameset today.

it's 12mmTA f&R, so you may need to reconsider your wheel choice.
nevermind, those are convertible.

Wish I had access to that cheaply. Current sscx wheels are hope disc/chrisscross that could port over, and i9 single speed ultra lights that are just waiting for a frame again.

is cx expert vs pro just a weight/hardware diff?
IME bb7 mtb is just fine albeit noisy, bb7 road requires more frequent adjustment than any other brake i've used.
spyres seem ok enough so far other than stock pads, but all of this is moot since they use cables and not fluid.

Not talking about the merely mediocre MTB model

The Road model has the same external geometry, but makes the BB ramps inside steeper to make up for some of the cable pull difference. They couldn't make it actually match the levers because the partial change already made the BB action marginal enough as it was.

Blakey
Blakey's picture

It's as low as it can go on the extended HT without dropping the platform forward of the HT, which would be more complicated than the straight run from rack to downtube.

It's also hella low compared to where a rack would sit on that spencer with it's OG front wheelsize

Small wheel problems. Rack is attached to the bottom of the headtube extension, setting it any lower would significantly complicate the construction.

I built mine to be low but it involved some chicanery, and getting the rack on and off involves some tetris to get it around the fork crown

I used to have that rack and it always looked wrong on the spencer since it was inexplicably oversized. Seemed like it was designed to go around fatbike tires but this was way before fatbikes.

I'd really like to hear why you like rapid rise. I've never known anyone who put it on their spencer intentionally.

To me it's like setting up your levers moto style. Some folks do it, but I don't get why.

For poopbarning its pretty obvious, if you broke a cable it would default to the lowest gear, not the tallest. For XC racing, you are on the rivet for 2 hours, you approach a climb and you are in oxygen debt, it pretty much changes gear itself with a tap of the shifter. Thats what I liked, the lack of effort needed to change gear when you are in the red. If you want to go faster obviously you have the energy to do that and you expend more energy actually pushing the lever against the spring, to a faster cog.
I just realised I probably sound like Jan Heine. But seriously that's why I loved it.
As for moto style, I did come from a motorbike background and I do have my front brake on the right, as does everyone over here except for the occasional american. What do they do in europe?
