There are full-dip and partial-dip versions of the Ninja Ice gloves, the partials have the rubber treatment on the fingers and palm while the full-dips have the waterproofing on the back of the hand as well but the cuff area is still untreated and decidedly not waterproof. I'm not a huge fan of the ninja ice gloves myself. They are actually too grippy and it makes it hard to adjust a layer, operate a zipper, etc. They are a good value but only because they are like $6. Have a buddy that actually prefers them to other options for skiing.

re: wet shoes. All you need is a small desk fan and three hours. Pull the soles out, loosen the laces, and prop 'em up in front of the fan, they'll be dry by lunch.

I'm using these hideous ones cause they were the cheapest on amazon when I bought em. Work fine on the swept flat bars they're on. Cinched on extra well with some toe clip straps. Comfortable gloveless in mid 20s, hasn't gotten colder than that yet but I can't imagine I'll need more than light gloves with these. Wish I had done this years ago.

I got mine, but they're too big. I mean, they would definitely work, but they are designed for some 6'4", 350lbs country dude on an ATV, with arms the size of my thighs. I guess I should put them on and see how they are before I return them, but holy hell are they ridiculous.

3ºF start on Thursday. Rode about 10 miles. I had my big thick mittens on, no pogies, and my hands were fine. Once every 10 rides I dress perfectly for the conditions and arrive warm, comfortable, and mostly dry and Thursday was one of those days. But yeah, really fuckin' cold for New England these past few days.

It was -30* last night/this morning. I think with wind chill, not sure. Rode in 2* earlier last night and that was enough for me considering i didn't have anywhere important to go.

For next winter I'm going to switch from barmitts to something different. And ideally >25mm tyres.

Just found some neoprene roadie shoe covers in the garage yesterday that I forgot I had. Gonna try them on over the chunky shoes and see if they keep me dryer. Any recommendations on waterproofing for neoprene? Thinking about spraying them in plastidip or something.

If you're riding in tracks that have been put in by a trails assn and paid for by someone, yeah, it is. If you're out in public and someone has skiied there, go for it. Decide if there's a reasonable expectation that the tracks will be used by skiiers only or if it's out in the great outdoors.

The backcountry dudes are getting bitchy because they're lazy and they don't want to make new skintracks, but they have no real right to expect that other users won't go on the same trails.

On my ride this morning (sub 30 is cold for Atlanta) a dude came out that may have been Grant's brother in law or sommat. Double top tube, the Riv pedals, Jack Browns, 3x9, full luggage set, and head to toe MUSA ragg stuff.

When we stopped for coffee, he dropped his kickstand and took a step back to admire his chariot. No pics because he parked it away from all the other bikes and it would have made him too happy for me to snap it.

I don't think I've ever met a Rivendell owner who embraced "beausage". One time, a customer had us face both sides of his new Joe Bell-painted Rivendell bottom bracket shell, then threw a fit because he changed his mind about which bottom bracket to use, and now he was going to have exposed frame, where we had removed the paint. He demanded we pay to get his frame repainted, and the owner of the shop had Joe Bell and GP call this dude to calm him down. We ended up paying for the repaint anyway, which is insane.

But generally, my Rivendell customers treated me as though I had never seen such a precious thing before, and I should perhaps consider wearing white cotton gloves before I contacted the bike. I guess I'd feel the same way if I dropped $4000 on a Trek 950.

There's a guy in my town who drives a Tesla. It's always, always completely covered in grime and the passenger side door has a huge dent in it. I idolize this guy. He buys a luxury car and proceeds to drive it into the ground.

I always pictured doing the same thing with an expensive custom bike someday. Just riding the absolute shit out of it, until it dies. There's a messenger in DC who rides a pre-Speedvagen Vanilla frame and he's been thrashing it as a work bike for ten years. His feed is "zalandy."

Professional photographers get it. They have $5,000+ worth of cameras swinging on their hips, no cases, no lens caps, no straps. It's a tool, insure it and use it.

I bought one of these and I want to run platforms. What non-cycling specific boots are people running on their fat bikes? This will be ridden like a mountain bike, so the boots need to grip the pedals well, but not feel too clunky.

Vasque Arrowheads. Not too heavy for a snowboot. Decent grip. There's probably better, but these were $75 on sale and have been going strong for two winters, hundreds of rides. Still waterproof and warm.

The Arrowheads are pretty good. Nice grip but don't have the quite the heavy snow boot feel of something like a Keen. For something more sneakery the Adidas Slopestyle is nice. The sole doesn't look like it would be that good with flats but it actually interfaces really well. Both are available from Sierra Trading Post.

Trails were solid ice today. Saw a shop buddy and his friend on fatbikes, and they said they both fell a lot. I fell twice, Kelley (pictured) did not fall at all and she's on 3" rubber.

Finally seeing the merit of studs this winter, with repeated freeze/thaw cycles coating everything like an ice rink. But, I won't spend the money so...

The cheap garden sprayer I got off Amazon is really pulling its weight now. My bikes are getting salted to shit on every ride. I did a full teardown/rebuild of the Pugsley a week ago, and a full teardown/rebuild of Kelley's Krampus to keep the corrosion at bay.

I have some turtle wax that I've been spraying on chainring bolts and such. It seems to be doing an okay job of keeping everything spinning. My SRAM/Surly cranks get rust inside the hollow spindle pretty much immediately and it stays forever, but hey, they're not museum pieces. The only rust I'm worried about is the kind that galls up bolts and necessitates drilling.

Let's see if I can get through the winter without freezing a seatpost!

Sidenote; this is either the worst winter in memory for frozen trails, or I'm doing a lot more trail riding than I used to. Cars have also been more of a PITA this winter, but I must be spending 50% more time on the bike, too.

I'm in Richmond, VA and am unearthing my summer kit from the bottom of my bike clothes drawer for a ride in an hour. Earlier this week it was in the 30's with a bitter wind. I'm not complaining, having experienced a bunch of Great Lakes winters in past, but man, pretty confusing to be wearing short sleeves in February.

We had clear trails for a week. All the snow and ice melted and it was perfect. Then, last Thursday we got a foot and a half of snow and today we're getting another 12 inches. And then more next week. I may not see the trail again until April.

Kind of a bummer, but at least the plows are hitting the shoulders. Haven't had to get off the bike yet.

I have no idea if the plowed shoulder is intentional or not. My local university has a bike committee that I sat in on once or twice, and they were all transportation guys and local planners. AKA, dudes who make decisions similar to plow routes. They were the ones that got bike racks put on all our local buses year-round.

And, my LBS has had like five welders/construction dudes/plumbers/electrician types come in and buy fatbikes and surly's this year. So, long story short, I would not be surprised if the local guy in charge of handing out instructions to snow plows said, "Plow the bike lanes, boys."
