I've been lurking for about a year now, but I'm lazy about taking pictures of my bikes. There's so many bad decisions and regrets to share. I might also be dumber than most because I tried to post a few weeks ago but kept getting caught by the spam filter.

And spam filter wins again. I guess no picture in this post.

I don't see any glaring problems. Has fenders, so yet another PNW-bro. Driveside pic, chain on the big chain ring, valve stems and labels are lined up. Seat angle isn't stupid. Seat post has setback. Bike might be a little small for what is obviously a very tall person, but seems fine.

I like the other stuff more, too.

So many regrets on those last two that I could write a whole lot of tl;dr about it all. I don't regret picking Dave to build that bike, he was awesome throughout the whole thing, and he nailed what I asked for, especially the fit (I'm 6' with a 37" inseam). I just asked for the wrong thing and then derped it up even more. I should have kept the pile of money and purple Merckx that it replaced. The black stem was supposed to be temporary on the way to a 1" MUSA stem, but I'm done spending money on that bike.

The Clem is indeed a couch, and it's for sale. That picture was taken on my ride to put it on consignment. If you buy it I'll include an double wall Ti dangle mug. Anyone else pays extra for the mug. Inquiries taken via PM.

My bikes look like they don't get ridden because mostly they don't. The fendered bikes get used for my 2 mile each way commute. The Kirk gets ridden 4 times a year. The knobby bike was just purchased this summer, but it gets ridden more than the Kirk.

Aww, thanks, but I guess that really all depends on what I end up doing here. I see two main possibilities.

Build up my incoming Hunter Gathererer (sooooon?), realize that most of my bikes are redundant and sell them all off except for basket bike and knobby bike, ride more, dither less, and take lots of pictures and have awesome adventures.

Or, I ask lots of dumb questions about things like the feasibility of having a framebuilder make me a 1" threaded loltrail fork for my 28 year old low end 26" rim brake deadender bike and then do it anyway.

These are both equally possible outcomes.

That Kirk is pretty disappointing.
-huge spacer stack on a custom frame is NO
-spacer stack and -17 stem just a totally needless conflict to introduce into this troubled world
-bar angle is wildly off
-lever bodies are in the right place in space, wrong place on bars
-I hope to YHWH that the bike is at least three or so years old, otherwise rim brakes? no?
-the cable routing off the bars is an unmitigated fiasco
-(not your fault, but) Kirk's logo looks like something a smalltown CAD drafting company would have cooked up in 2004

the good:
-I don't see the point of Campagnolo, but the silver Athena parts look good on the frame
- 32 spoke + Archetype is what I've got on another road bike of mine, it works well with the bike, and is strong
-good color balance on the components. I don't even mind the mismatched stem/steatpost
-it seems like a bike that could be really fun

So I dunno, it's weird. It seems like you know enough about bikes to do a sensible build with a frame from a well respected builder, then you do these puzzling, self-cancelling things with the position on the front end. Im curious: what did you build it up to do? Why that bike? Why don't you ride it?

TC I kinda want a Couch Clem to ride around town as a really expensive beater.

Also, I've seen so many terrible bikes that I'm pretty much immune, unless it comes from surly, in which case I'm trying to figure out what they are doing because it sure looks like dumb from here.

I agree! It's all my fault.

tl;dr version: Had too much time to spend on bike forums, had too much money, not riding enough, thought I was way more into road riding at the time (2011-ish) than I really ended up being, asked for the MUSA Pacer instead of the MUSA Space Horse with sidepulls.

All this was done early in 2012 (actually got on his wait list early 2011) when my bike world was only recreational road riding, and a 17 year old, too small stumpjumper that collected dust. I've always had problems getting comfortable on road bikes, which is why I stopped riding for twentyish years, and I was willing to try to spend the money to address some of the problems. My body proportions are a bit odd as mentioned earlier: long legs, long arms, short torso. The two bikes I was riding at the time, an 1985 Eddie Merckx Professional and a Ridley Compact, weren't giving me all of it. The Compact was especially bad for me. Some research showed that other similarly proportioned bike nerds were going custom. Down that rabbit hole I went.

Dave seemed like one of the better builders to address my fit issues. Lots of body measurements and after seeing those, he asked me to remeasure some things and take pictures of me on my current bike. He said my torso was about 5-6" shorter than he expected given my arm/leg lengths. I let him do his magic on the fit. I wanted a silver stem and he actually talked me out of a Thomson, so I ended up with a Ritchey Classic. The bars are Ergosum Pros, bought from him. Both were considered in his design. I think he did fantastically on the fit.

The camera might be doing weird things, but the ramps are pretty close to horizontal out to the levers. I put the -17 stem on to see if I liked riding with it (I did) before I yolo'ed up for an art-is-anal stem for looks (I didn't). There are two traditional bend bars in my stash (Rotundo and a Ritchey something) that I might play around with some day, but bar swaps suck.

It doesn't get ridden mainly because I'm not into plain old road riding much right now. And after experiencing a modern off-roading bike, I'd honestly rather ride that. It would be way easier to sell if it didn't ride so well.
