Lol, probably. I meant that the wifebiek has the 170mm hub, and I wouldn't mind getting another one in that hubway.

Lol awesome. We got some more snow last night so we went for a ride this morning. The wief was struggling some since she's still learning the ropes, but once the snow got deep she was still doing better than me with my studded tires.

Anybody know if the Origin8 tires are supposed to be any good? Seems to me the big problem with the cheap/non-QBP fat bikes is that the tires are awful. The QBP tires are insanely expensive but it seems they may be worth the money compare to things like Vee Rubber.

Also worth posting this blurb from the BD facebook page:

Quote:
More news from Fatbike-dom!

We're expecting to get a new Motobecane Boris FS with a 120mm front travel fork!
In addition to the 2015 Boris versions with X5, X7, and X9, we hear that a new front-suspension Boris FS X9 with a new suspension fork is in the works!
We expect a late-summer delivery, and we think this bike will be an exciting addition to the Boris line-up!

Motobecane models for 2015 [delivery late summer 2014] will include:
FB4 with 135mm rear axle [5 models]
Boris with 170mm rear axle [4 models]
Ivan with 190mm rear axle [3 models]

Still in the works:
A 4130 Chrm-moly model which will offer many improvements over current steel fat bikes on the market, in addition to having a way more attractive pricing.

A FLY model which will be exactly what the name implies; if Motobecane can get it down to 23 or 24 lbs and keep the price affordable, it will be a-go for late summer 2014. Making light bikes is easy. Making them affordable is the trick!

We would love to hear your comments on what you would like to see in fat bikes!

Happy Riding!

I have a feeling that the extra snow this Winter is gonna make this market happen in a big way.
5 years from now, people will be selling them used for peanuts.

Only because the segment will have matured and the early adopters are moving on to lighter/better hambieks. Maybe the trickiest thing about them will be just how slowly they wear out (my traditional excuse to offload./upgrade).

Trying really hard not to drive to Wisconsin this weekend to buy a nicely equipped and priced Pugs. Just need to keep reminding myself to hold out for a Mukluk...

The closer prices get to $1000 the less I worry about the hambiek bubble bursting. I see just enough people buying them here that I think the special parts will be available for the foreseeable future. I'd just really like to see a really solid pair of tires closer to the $100 mark.

I guess I don't reeeaaaalllly get the hambiek thing cos I live in Australia. Hey, I like 'em, they just seem redundant for the riding I do. But how is it that so many bike companies are releasing bikes/parts for the ham market when shit like or 650b road rims/bikes or road-ish bikes that take 32mm tires with fenders and/or disc brakes, are seemingly so fucking hard to do?

I don't really have a set distance/price range mapped out, but I think any bikes that are legit enough deals for me to drive 4 hours for would probably get snapped up locally a bit faster.

I have a definite soft spot for these balls to the walls builds. Custom tour divide bikes, north pole crossing bikes, that sort of shit. But it only makes my pants tight if the owner plans on putting themselves in mortal danger on it. Maybe the nearest grocery store is across a glacier?

Hamwief wanted to run to lab today so I told her she should take her hambiek. Strangely, the sun was shining bright enough today that there was a ton of melt everywhere even though it was supposed to be in the 20s (maybe they lied?). Anyway, she got covered in spray which was pretty funny. Got super jelly when we got to this unplowed-but-driven-on road that she just bobbed right along on while my 32c "skinny" tires kept digging in and slowing me down.

Can't decide if I should order her fenders or not. I know I love them on my winter bike on days like this, but I dunno how much she'll want to keep riding in this muck. I guess they don't cost much anyway.

I went out for my second attempt at snowbieking yesterday and it was a complete and utter failure. I had previously ridden the same trail with much less snow, and it was super fun and still relatively quick.

Yesterday there was not a cloud in the sky, and low 20's. About a foot and a half of snow and tons and tons and tons of foot/bootprints everywhere. The trail was incredibly soft and mushy. Nothing was getting packed in, just cutting new lines everywhere.

After riding a mile and a half, falling over a bunch, and getting off to push my bike countless times. I turned around and went back to my car.

Even the hamdorks were giving up, so I don't feel too bad about it. Ended up salvaging the day by going to Ray's and getting somewhat rad.

Lessons learned - singlespeed and mushy snow makes for not a lot of fun.

Madison had a novelty 'cross' race around the capitol square this morning, half of which was on some of the snow they use for XC skiing for the rest of this weekend festival. I think it was pretty good ski snow, but it kicked erryone arse on bikes. Most of the hambieks were squirming and spinning pretty badly. I'm thinking it was manufactured snow. Good fun.

There's a guy about half an hour out of Madison that I emailed about a Pug last week. Dude emailed me again about it today and I saw he lowered his price. $1100 with a Revelate bag and those overpriced 45nrth pedals. I'd be pretty tempted if I could chisel him down another $100 but I'm still holding out for a Mukluk.

Hit 50 yesterday and every refreezing puddle had been swerved through so as to make riding a nightmare of rutted glare ice. Going down a popular inner city trail this morning behind a guy on a Hambiek as he passed a middle aged woman during a street crossing. She swerves almost wiping him out and then stops sideways to strike up a conversation.

Meanwhile I'm skating on glare ice right at her. So stricken was she with proclaiming her love for Hambiek she ignored my screams I was about to hit her, the car horn of the equally precariously footed car bearing down on her in the middle of the road, and that the guy on the Hambiek cursed over his shoulder at her and was riding away.

It alternately infuriated me to no end and proved every logical complaint I have about Hambieks and middle aged women. She actually stink eyed the driver and I for daring to interrupt her attempt to associate herself with the Hambiek scene. I really hope this is just a MN thing because it comes off as stranger than fiction.

These are the days where I think that even if I got a hambiek that I would still want my hybrid. With a big thaw yesterday and then an overnight freeze, there was quite a bit of ice on the bike paths. Studded tires kept me upright, though I wasn't going too fast most of the time. There was one short icy incline that I don't think a hambiek would have made it up.

Though I suppose if I got a Mukluk, I could buy the On-One 29er wheelset and just stick my studded tires on there for rapid wheel swaps on icy mornings... Selling the hybrid would basically cover the cost of the wheels lol

I can already see how that goes. At my weight, the rear wheel just digs into snow and then I get stuck. It's like when my lbs-bro told me that maybe I only needed a studded tire on the front wheel. I can tell you just from the ride I had to work today that at my weight you need to cover both ends.

Anyway, by the time you've bought a fork, brakes, and a wheel tire combo, you're about 50% of the way (or more) to a used bike.

Finding some spare tires for cheap shouldn't be too hard to do this to once you have recovered from paying for the Hambiek. You are right that even with studs it is precarious and there is no reason to only run them in the front.

Low tire pressure so they deform enough to bite into the studs is the really important part. Somewhere Tarckee posted a vid of Nys? riding studded tubs on and ice rink with almost no air in them.
