Yeah, my smile is pretty horrible. In spite of my bitchy resting face, I think my "moderate effort" face looks like a smile. Basically, when your legs are burning just a little, but you're not digging a hole and you can feel yourself breathing kinda hard? Guess I tend to open my mouth a little wider to take in air and it looks like a smile to people. They smile back. That's pretty cool.

Got my fastest ever time up a short local climb yesterday trying to chick some guy. I think he must have been a racer coz shaved legs. I got in front of him at one point, trying to be all nonchalant, but he was faster than he looked and got me back. Cat 5.5?

This is PDX in a nutshell. That guy who looks like a hobo riding a hybrid who you try to drop up the interstate hill? First they accelerate away seated, then you see them line up in the cat 1s at the next race.

Doug and I got cat 6ed by a pro MTBer one time. That was pretty lolsy. This guy was in spandex, but I pegged him for a slow fred, since there are a lot of those on the cemetery climb.

I love cat 6ing interstate hill on my grocery getter basket bike.

The other weekend when mountain biking in Boulder--Get to the top of a climb, where a lollipop begins. I'm with my buddy, and 3 other dudes roll up around the same time. I eavesdrop on the 3 dudes, I overhear that one guy is ranked #34 in the world for XC, one guy is some major mountain bike bro, and the other guy has been riding pro for Ibis for like 20 years.

There's ALWAYS someone faster than you out here.

Edit: I forgot to mention the CAT 6 guy in this situation....ME! Mr. #34 and I had the exact same bike.

FINALLY ran into some other folks this morning. Which was weird, because the sun was shining but it was windy and pretty cold. Seeing other people allows me to motivate myself to push it a little more, which probably makes me the classic Cat6 dbag.

Motivated me to start looking at Strava segments again. Blech. Guess I need to take my svelte new body out on my Klein to see if I've actually made any improvement over the winter, or if a lighter road bike actually makes any difference compared to my boat anchor hybrid & LHT.

got passed by a guy on platform pedals on a gmc denali or some other similar cheapo "road bike" as I was getting going when the light turned green.
then he proceeds to take an easy corner very slowly, so I caught up and then passed him on the next straight while cruising at zone 2 pace on my commuter (90's mtb with 2.25 nomads). 20 seconds later I see him out of the corner of my eye trying to pass me again. Oh hell no, I am not playing this game with you bro. Laid down the hammer for a couple minutes and he was outa sight outa mind. Kinda glad I didn't see him again at a stoplight though because I would have been breathing embarrassingly hard

My cat 6 game this week has been riding slowly to get the draft behind jocky college students on mtbs who are killing themselves cuz 20 mph wind (and to stay ahead of me). They usually get all spent in like 300 meters though, look back, then get on the sidewalk and I have to find a new one.

Recently I've only seen Citibike riders on my commute, which is no fun because they are geared so low that they spin out at around 15 mph.

I love just easing up to people that are trying to stay ahead of me. They ratchet up the pace while I'm sitting in the draft. It's awesome.

I crushed a small paceline of college team kids on my commuter bike. Sat in for a while til I got sick of "hey did you race (last weekend's local race)?" And then took the canal path to drink a beer before heading home. Felt awesome.

Had an epic Cat 6 battle with old triguy on the Snohomish the other day. I was cruising along at a solid 18 or so, not exactly hammering, but feeling good. I can hear a rider gaining on me, but per the rules of Cat 6, I did not turn to see who was coming. Some forty something Cerveloed triguy comes flying past me, only to slow down immediately to 17 or so. I hopped on his wheel, as he had ridden mine. Guy lasts maybe two minutes, and suddenly just pulls off. Guess he burned that match trying to catch me. VICTORY.

Later, another triguy and I would team up after a brief chat, but I decided to forgot about him as he started jackassing up the BG at rush hour.

Also, got dispatched today on my commute by an old dude on a Ritchey Break-Away. He was super nice, but I couldn't hold his wheel up Lake Washington with my heavy-ass backpack, terrible sleep, and general absence of fitness.

Sock puppet for sure.

Speaking of tri-guys. Was doing laps around bay farm island a couple months back. This is one of my favorite routes. Pan flat for the most part, but windy as hell. Lap is 8 miles and one rarely needs to put a foot down. Anyway, I was making a turn onto the downwind leg, which generally goes around 25mph. Just before the turn, though, there's a short little ramp that slows one down a bit.

Anyway, made the turn and started to accelerate when some tri-dork gives a kick and just blasts by me. I was kinda pissed, coz the did had no idea what my pace was going to be. About 30 feet past me the dude flatted. Kinda giggled as I blasted by him.

Got snaked at a red light by a tourerbro on either a straggler or disc trucker. Proceeded to drop him stone cold on the next climb, sneaky look back and I was half a block ahead by next intersection. Feelsgood.

I tried to reverse drop some college kid on his dad's spiffy Italian steel bike to avoid backing him up over a long bridge. Got him to pass then realized he was cat6 racing me and I ceded the battle as soon as he got within range. Coasted almost the entire bridge trying to avoid repassing him and feeling like a prick.

Does it count as Cat6 when somebody is riding on the sidewalk and you blow by them on the road? Or does the sidewalk effectively disqualify a competitor?

Today I got passed by:
a college student hammering to class in spandex on a road bike
an old man with a speaker bungeed to his front rack
an old woman with knock knees and an upright bicycle
a stereotypical nerd with a long braid, a runny nose, and giant white sneakers
and that was just on the 2 mile segment of the burke between fremont and the UW. I was the slowest thing out there because I forgot to bring lunch today, and I wanted to keep my HR down to make breakfast last as long as possible. So broke, so hungry.

NOOOOO, My cat6 commuting just got way less pretty/easy. Bike trail that goes directly to my workplace (as in, front door on the trail) is closed for a year yet again smiley. This, just on the heels reopening after being closed for a solid THREE years as it was covered in gigantic sandbags for flood precautionary measures.
I guess I should feel lucky there is a parallel detour route that is straight and free of cars.

Got destroyed by a girl in plain kit this afternoon while casually spinning into a headwind. Thought she was out doing intervals when she sat up not too long afterwards. Spent the next 4 miles wasting time at intersections and seeing how much wind I could catch in and effort to avoid riding past her.

Felt like payback for putting on a little more speed than needed to pass some people so they wouldn't try to latch on.

when i commuted into boston as an intern and locked up at the t station, i did this for a whole summer. it was great, no one stole the bike. except when it rained it kind of sucked because the steel wheel would spin inside the wet tire.

^Passed a rider doing just this today.

Out-track standed a fixie bro today, on my road bike. He was intent on Cat 6ing up the hill, and I let him bury himself to stay out of the wind, then he turned off into a parking lot, perhaps because he got where he needed to go, but I'm pretty sure he was just spent. I don't know, maybe he really needed some copies, or a bowl of noodles.

Hit the MUP on the way to the train today, was about two minutes in with cold legs and took a little uphill section a bit slow, some dude on a. 90s MTB came around me and parked in front of me. I was flabbergasted. Hung behind him a little to gauge his pace he was moving kinda slow. His knobbies were howling. Passed a little traffic and then slowly eased up next to him on the MUP. He clearly took a really big dig. It was hilarious. He was sitting upright, on knobbies, giving it everything and moving about 17mph. Even if he did have my fitness, there was no way he was going to match my pace.

Finally gave a little seated kick and blasted off, railed a couple corners and never saw him again.
