Philips SafeRide 80 light

Here's the review I wrote for my blog:

http://www.gravelbike.com/?p=1449

TL;DR version -- It's fantastic. The beam shape and light distribution is nearly perfect. I just wish it had a longer run-time. I'm going to replace my current dynamo headlight with the 60 lux generator-compatible model.

Did you actually get 2h out of it on high?

There was a bug in the microcontroller that forces it into eco mode after an hour, but if you remove and reinsert one of the batteries it'll go for another hour. Did they fix that?

I have the 60 lux dynamo version on my rSogn, it is indeed awesome. You will want to mount it under a handlebar bag to keep the nearfield out of your direct vision.

I'm definitely getting more than one hour on high. I'll double-check the actual time, though.

Have you experienced any problems with the 60 lux/dyanmo model's bracket (cracking)?

I don't use the bracket that came with it, but know exactly where it would crack

I mount it directly to the front rack

One oddity, the through hole in it's plastic mount is 2-3x as wide as most lights, and also 5mm where everything else is 6mm. I bored mine out to use an M6 bolt, and I know other people have slimmed theirs down to fit in a normal bracket.

Have you heard/seen anything about the new B&M lights that Peter White will be carrying?

I'm pleasantly surprised to see that Universal is carrying some of the Supernova lights.

they've been in QBP forever (though the StVZO "Terraflux" ones have only been in there for a couple years)

why else do you think all the nahbs builders kept using them?

their triple has something going for it but the rest are all pretty terrible compared to the competition

Let me know if you end up doing a starbike group buy on that, I'd be interested.
Thanks

My experiences with the Saferide 80 are the same as yours. Fred keeps asking about that micro controller cutoff thing but I've never experienced it either. Fred and I call it "The Hand of God" and it's a stellar light. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Run times are the same for me - about 2hrs on high, about 8hrs on low. As you know it's freaking huge but that's my biggest complaint about it. Well, I also don't think access to the batteries should be rethought and not require a multi-tool to get off, but whatever. These are minor things.

If you order them from Germany they come out to being about $110. Or mine was. Totally worth it ATMO.

http://www.philipsbikelight.com/where-to-buy seems to think they're on Amazon, so... $89? (and "free" two-day if that's how you roll.)

Thanks for the heads up Ro.

Saferide 80 for $90 on Amazon. This is the battery light I have. It is fucking awesome. Fred and I call it The Hand of God. 2hrs on high, between 6 to 8 on low - that is still very bright. Runs on AA batteries and has an integrated charger so if you want to recharge them in the light, you can.

It is STVZO complaint shaped beam to stay out of the eyes of oncoming riders, but puts out enough light to go mountain bike riding at night if you angle it up - I know because I've done it. I cannot sing this lights praises enough.

One word of warning - it's pretty big.

My Ixon has fallen off my bike at speed twice now. Is covered in tape and cracks. When it craps out, I'm getting one of those.

it's $150 yesterday, it's $151 today. Wonder if it'll keep getting more expensive until sales fall off.
