Something like these deals? http://www.wiggle.com/avid-shorty-4-cantilever-brake/
Sorry for the dumb questions, but I have zero experience with any of this. Will they: a) stop me b) work with road levers c) not suck?

mostly, yes, mostly.
Try them for a bit, then a switch to kool stop pads will make a big difference.

mini-vs are also cool, but I am not sure how much clearance they would have for a fender. It worked fine on my salsa casseroll, but not for my cannondale cross bike.

Cool. They're mega cheap too so I might just go with them. This thing is gonna see the worst of Stockolm slush-commuting, so fenders and clearance are high on the priorities, mini-v's might just complicate things.

I would go full sized Vs provided you can find V drop bar levers you like. Pad clearance is mainly a non-issue for a city bike, and the longer brake arms will clear your fenders better. You might give up a little modulation, but for a commuter bike power when you need it is probably more important anyway.

Plus as has already been mentioned V brakes are cheap as fuck.

And, if you ever decide to switch to flat/riser/whatever bars all you have to buy is some cheap as fuck levers.

Any thoughts on Tektro 720's? They're even cheaper...

i had tektro 720's on my pomp.
the stock pads were uninspiring and i think they shuddered (with a steerer mounted hanger on an XL frame so YMMV.
i've since discovered that the tektro pads actually seem better in the wet (still not great but better than dry)
I swapped them out for tektro 926AL mini Vs, which work fine with road levers, just upgrade them with your brake pad of choice (i used koolmax cross cartridges which fit Vs / cantis and hold a standard road pad)
i had sufficient clearance with ~40mm knobbies on the front so they'd probably be OK with fenders, i never had any problems with pad clearance (the short arm of the 926 should give the greatest pad clearance of any mini V for any give road lever)

tl;dr best to buy new pads if buying tektro

People have been pretty pleased with the 720s. But like most brakes, pad upgrades make them better.

720s have mostly felt like doodoo to me, though some setups I've fondled have been better than others.

I feel like even cheap cantis + road levers and v-specific levers + even cheaper V brakes is probably a wash money-wise.

Also, the new Pomp does't have a rear canti cable stop, so that's some more bullshit you gotta buy. Have the Surly hanger-jawn on two bikes and it is ok, but a real stop is way better.

Yeah, I ordered in a hurry before deciding on brakes so I didn't get the cable stops with it, assuming, wrongly, that I could find some locally...

But I found some used Tektro road levers, the Campag style deals and some Avid Shorty 6's here, so I went with them, except currently stopless.

Realized too that my homemade headset press doesn't seat crown races. Should I just buy a 29mm ID pipe and hit it.

All the major stuff works though. Mostly. I guess I'll hunt the rest down today.

It looks sweet thought. I've got good taste.
