I choose to see this as a prodigal example of tarck at its finest. Refusing to stay on topic despite of the best efforts of others.

No kidding :) A little disappointing to see how helpful everyone in that thread was too. How boring.

My dumbest questions bypassed bikeforums and were emailed rush delivery directly to Sheldon...

haha. i think it's because it was right before the boom of idiotic fixed gear questions started. if they had any clue of what the future had in store, they probably would've given me the proper hazing.

Can this be the all-purpose thread for posting shit you find on the internet involving people being dipshits in spencer related ways? Excluding the building of jackass bicycles, which we already have a thread for.

Holy carp.

Are we now going to see stamped-steel seatstay/brake bridges on all the frames at NAHBS?

Tue, 05/31/2011 - 11:20

Yes but they have been stamped for generations by a family of artisanal stampers.

Nah they're a recent company so their practices aren't quite so spectacularly shitty / artisanal as the other euro manufacturers she loves

TIG means that they actually have to miter the main tubes instead of just hearth-brazing unfinished ends into pressed lugs. They even claim to use cromo instead of mild steel or pig iron!

Dropouts and bridges might be stamped steel plate but at least they're TIGed instead of just having the tube smashed around them:

Not only did they cap the seatstays, they even bothered to weld them to the seat cluster instead of just smashing+drilling the ends and shoving the seat clamp bolt through them!

Standards are low

Not if it's shellacked, it isn't. You might not be able to use it again, but cloth tape comes right off after it's got a couple of layers of beetle spit to stiffen it up.

That cat looks ready to bolt.

Really the lever placement seems slightly on the low side, but not terrible. With the bars at that angle they would be hard to reach from the drops without huge hands though.

i think that noodles are just hard to brake from the drops. i can hardly reach mine, which really limits how much i'm in the drops.

the lever placement looks fine, nice relatively flat transition from the ramps, but the bars are angled pointing to somewhere between the rear dropout and the bb

Unless you have tiny hands, your levers are set too high, or your bars are tilted back like that Lovely Bicycle I am confused by this statement.

Pics of the setup?

If it's a tiny hand thing have you tried short reach levers or (if running brifters) shims to bring them closer?

i definitely do have small hands, which might be entire problem, but i swear that i've heard other people have this same complaint about noodles. it could also be the dia compe 287v levers that i'm using.

not taking a new pic, using this one that i've already posted somewhere on tarck. it's the trek in the background. i guess my levers might look a little high, but that's where they need to be to have the best transition.

Looks like a combo of lever reach, levers mounted high, and bars tilted up.

Unfortunately I can't think of a v-friendly short reach lever, but those dia compes have a pretty scooped out hood shape. Maybe Tektros or Cane Creek would be better?

Those levers seem pretty high. You might want to switch to Tektro V levers if you can stand them. I love them, but many seem to be against them. They have a flatter top that transitions really nicely from the flat section of NUDLZ.

Yeah, I've been meaning to make the tektro switch I agree that they are a little high, but outside of this issueit feels good.

Here's how I setup my Nitto Sobas (same shape as noodles):

Before wrapping with tape, I placed a ruler across the bottom of the drops and made sure the tips of the brake levers barely touched. Then, bars were rotated so that levers pointed almost straight down. Did a minor counter-clockwise bar rotation sometime in the past year to get it just right.

Maybe this will help the lady with the petrified cat above, too.
