I get that "Nordic culture / heritage" is often a dog whistle for Nazis (in the US, at least, dunno about the rest of the world), but he's maybe just doing it innocently. Rawland's graphic identity is all faux-runic font and scrollwork, not like, valknuts and sunwheel crosses or whatever.

That having been said, in 2017 America, I'd definitely take any opportunity to ditch that style and pivot to some bland retro outdoorsy / vintage mtb graphic identity instead. Get nostalgia dollars from thirtysomething bike dorks, right?

After living in Seattle, you come to realize that there are a many, many people who are simply proud of their Norse heritage, without Norse mythology being used, as iwillbe said, as dog-whistle racism.

Fair point. I've never been to Seattle so I won't pretend to dismiss it. I'm even wary of the contrasting Rapha arm band feature, so I may be looking for problems where there genuinely are none.

However, it's America, and it's 2017...

Wait how is the nordic shit racist? I don't get it. There is a possibility that either I'm totally missing something or y'all are over-analyzing something.

edit: It really depresses me seeing all this historic runic stuff, which I always thought was pretty neat, being used as hate symbols. Really.

It's not inherently racist, but the symbols have, since the dawn on the Third Reich, been co-opted by fascists and Nazis to symbolize some notion of white purity. Meanwhile, in Seattle, it's almost entirely old Swedes who claim to be descended from Leif Ericson.

There's an easy line you can draw from Nordic culture-worship to both the racist power noise folks and the right-wing Neofolk types, who are all about the death of egalitarianism and cosmopolitanism and ushering in a new era of organic social hierarchies and supra-individual values ("the death of the West"). Which—on its surface in logos and marketing material—can be appealing to outdoorsy cyclist types who like dense forests and like to get away from civilization, but don't realize the implicit opposition to multiculturalism. (Hence my rant on Prolly a few pages back.)

Edit: it's just bikes, who cares

This is one of my big problems with antimodern politics /Euro heritage culture in general. The cultural baggage packed into "getting back to nature" or "finding your roots" is pretty gross, at best.

Like, if US citizens who were intersted in their Euro heritage wanted to explore the horrendous mismanagement in late-monarchical Europe that produced a destitute peasant class that was willing to move to a different continent to try their luck, then sure, there's grounds for a left critique of the present political arrangement of the United States. 99% of heritage stuff skips over that period in favor of a mythical past of hardy villagers in a stable premodern world, unsullied by factories and cities and democracy.

So yeah, I guess choose your bike company's graphica carefully or a bunch of nerds will overanalyze it on an obscure fixie forum.

I'm pretty proud of my Irish heritage, I even have Irish heritage pins and a tricolor flag sticker on my grando. I'm pretty glad that, as far as I know, none of that stuff has been co-opted, yet. (except for that goddamn celtic cross.)

This one's still good though:

Yeah, we can totally go back to that, first we need to wipe out 95% of the population of the planet and then maybe our descendants will rise from the bones and form a neo-pagan animist utopia.

The heavy metal nerds who also love bikes forget that many of those bands are outright fascists and co-opt the imagery because it is edgy and looks cool. Also, bikes is a buncha white dudes.

I was thinking about it, and yeah, there's a version of Irish-American cultural history that explicitly reckons with histories of exploitation and forced migration. I was thinking about PNW nordic stuff too closely when typing out my answer.

And yeah, know your audience, which is apparently the Venn diagram of people who like bikes and people who are deeply creeped out by World Serpent bands.

My great-grandparents were basically forced here in the mid 1800s. To think, if that hadn't happened I might be cruising around the countryside with the Lovely Bicycle cycling club on a vintage rover.

I think pivoting to kids’ bikes is Sean’s only gambit left!

And, going way back — did Sean lose control of all the stock!? Meaning he is basically out of the company? Holy shit.

Carrot does not resemble a carrot very closely, the stalks are all wrong.

Also in for stickers big enough to cover the rawland stickers on my nerdavinden.

This is what happens when a hobbyist like Sean goes into business with someone who has managed to run a somewhat successful bike shop for years: real business people don't fuck around.

Oh god, all Sky does is fuck around. How he's stayed in business this long is nothing short of miraculous. If he's left with Rawland, he'll surely screw it up just as Sean did.

If anything, the "new owners" are less qualified to run a bike company than Sean was to run a school for the deaf.
