Damn, I've been thinking hard about looking for a doner frame to build up a DGAF flatbar disc commuter (1x drivetrain) that's painted to look exactly like one of Seattle's new bike share. Planning to throw a front rack and basket and maybe get some faux decals cut to say something funny.
I wonder if Advocate Sand County could fill that role? $300 is a pretty great deal.

hmmmm....

Yes, new Claris stays with the old derailleur actuation, so you can run it with any old stuff you got.

It looks good and works perfectly well (especially for the price), but definitely has a very plastic-y feel.

So for 8 speed dead-ending, do you go Claris R2000 or Shimergo with something like Centaur 10 speed levers?

shimergo 8sp dead ending cru checking in
works good using 9sp levers, "hubbub" cable routing (10 sp campy just works straight up AFIK) and 5700 dangler.
No experience with the claris (or shimano shakes at all)

The last time I layed hands on Claris, it was bunk. But given the leap Tiagra has made, I can believe this new stuff might be good.

The Claris that came on Ash's Vaya was such garbage that we replaced it after literally one 25 mile ride.

If anyone is still considering it, I just unpacked a sand county and it seems pretty nice. The paint looks much better in person than in all of the photos I could find online—a little darker than I expected with a subtle sparkle. The fork is heavy, but that’s no surprise. Definitely a great deal if you’re in the market.

Nashbar has free shipping on anything. Would be a perfect time to pick up some consumables or an extra bottom bracket, where you may not have made free shipping before. 11 speed chains or outboard bottom brackets, shipped to your door for less than wholesale.

Damn! I'd totally get that and stash it in a corner for LB's yet-to-be-decided new road frame that we might or might not get next year, but I'm sure it'll be back up to higher prices by the time Jan. rolls around.

now I'm looking at their groups and oogling a full slx group for when I get my own cargo bike.

EDIT: fuck it, I'm gonna ball out and get full XTR m9000 on my bullit.

EDIT2: Fuck, maybe I can't. I don't think the freehub body I have on the aerospoke will take 11spd. Gotta check.

but 11sp MTB fits 8/9/10 road freehubs? Or do the spok spokes get in the way of the dished cassette or something? (or is it 7sp)

It's kind of a weird setup. I'm going to grab an 11spd cassette from work and test fit it. Probably works but I don't want to drop all the money and then have to ditch the wheel.

No, I really don't. When you have a fleet of 7 cargo bikes being ridden 12 hours a day 365 days a year by 50 different couriers you can let me know what wheel you think works best. For my money the aerospoke wins.

We went through about a rear wheel a month for a long time. Mostly waiting for another 26" aerospoke to pop up on craigslist or ebay. We had 36 and 40 spoke downwhill wheels built. They'd last a few months, 3 at most, before needing major service. About 6 months before you could really call the wheel dead and have to start sourcing a new one. Once or twice a week each bike will have to carry 400-500lbs down hills and shitty roads. I change brake pads almost weekly.

The only reason I'd ditch the wheel is because it's me riding the bike and not 50 different people. Though the couriers valued the business they don't exactly treat the bikes like they treat their own (not like they treat their own very well). And to be fair a major problem with spoked wheels is freelocking. Bullitts get freelocked way more than your normal bike. This results in bums and randos hopping on to ride off or whatever and the lock pings/dents/breaks a spoke. The spoke goes unnoticed for a few days and suddenly the wheel is pretty well fucked. All of that is to say that under an individual owner you could probably get away with a 36 spoke wheel for a long long time. But if I have a bulletproof aerospoke already on the bike I'd rather use that.

Plus it's easier to freelock.

In case anyone was wondering, Shimano recently had an S-Tec flash sale, where industry insiders who has finished some number of Shimano courses, could get an R8000 group for just under $600.

ooh freelocking will definitely fuck your shit up even with 13g spokes, and 8 pounds of fiberglass is a solid defense

(I'm kinda surprised that the aerospoke freehubs hold up for y'all)

You think an auto-locking centerstand could be solution?

That's actually not a bad idea at all. The centerstand on a couple of the bullits are pretty worked and need replacing.
