Anyone at a shop in San Francisco that would be able to hold a boxed bike for me for a week until I'm able to pick it up? FedEx keeps moving my delivery date around and i'm not sure anyone will be at the house to sign for it.

They sent a customer a bike to their house, with no signature required and it was left there....in Vallejo....an eTap/hdyro dicks/carbon wheel bike.

Customer had provided a business address yet they shipped to a home address.

ShartQ: Are Canyons cheaper than something like a Trek or a Specialized then? Because if you don't get to have the weird Euro commuter bikes, it seems like you could buy the equivalent of any of these bikes at a dealer and then get a little assembly and service. I want to like the direct-to-consumer model here but for some reason idgi right now

They have a full carbon fatbike for less than I paid for my alloy Speh with slightly better components. :(
Of course I supported an LBS with my purchase so there's that.......

Yes, Canyons are often a few thousand less than competing bikes from the major manufacturers. Where they do really well is at the high end, where they are selling S-Works quality bikes for the price of some entry level carbon jawns. In the ~$800-1400 range, the offerings are pretty similar to that of the big makers, which is why their big splash has been in the road and MTB market.

But the thing about Canyon is that you they arrive assembled. The way it works in Europe is that the bikes are assembled by pro mechanics in Germany, then package so that when they arrive, all you do is install the front wheel and use a torque wrench (provided) to adjust the stem and seatpost. In North America, I don't know what they are doing it now, but I know that they're about to announce a deal with Velofix, the mobile repair company, to assemble the bikes as part of the sale.

Ah that makes sense then. Is the quality comparable to the other big brands then? (I mean, I'm kind of assuming all the bikes probably come from the same warehouse in Taiwan at some point)

Not gonna lie, I really want an aeroad or an ultimate. The aeroad looks kinda bad-ass and futuristic, has a sort of BMC TMR-01 vibe but at a way lower price point. Only thing I'm not stoked on is the stem/handlebar combo, as it doesn't seem like there are different drop/reach/stem length options. Paint colors leave a little to be desired, but I kinda dig the women's team color scheme, and the geo appears to be exactly the same between comparable sizes.

They supposedly have an office of some sort in Carlsbad, I wonder if they'd have any bikes I could try out.

You can get universal pulley kits that come with a selection of different sizes plastic spacer things to suit campy, shimano etc. Might be worth a look?

Changing the pulley bolt won't work, since the backside of the plate is threaded for the 6mm bolt. A custom bolt would also be required to be 6mm to thread into the plate, so that's a non-starter, plus I don't care that much. This is a customer's clapped out Peugeot, not some Heiney-style Francophile retro fop chariot.

If it's relevant to your interests Mig, this guy is selling modified Sunrace and Shimano pulleys which will fit Simplex. I assume he buys the 10-pack on derailleur pulley wheels for $5 and drills them out with better tools than I have access to.

Carlsbad will have a fleet of demos, also there will be some available at various events etc. The combo bar / stem comes in a few combo variations in popular sizes, and will be a ready availability for customization on orders in the very near future.

Yes, the bikes ship pre-tuned and ready to ride with a supplied torque wrench, customer only needs to install wheel and handlebar and/or stem and inflate tires, also adjust suspension on mtb's with supplied shock pump.

Urban / commuters are coming, just not in the initial launch.

Yes, I work for Canyon US.

giant bikes used to come with shock pumps when i worked in the shop. store owner made us take them out of the box and slap a $30 sticker on them.

so buying direct just ensures the end user is getting everything that comes in the box?

Is this the same owner that would make us remove the stickers that came with BMX parts and put them in a bag with a price tag?

when i was racing collegiate, our wisened old grad student (bernie) used slime in his wheels. he had a good setup - he trained on mavic open sports 4x laced, straight gauge spokes, to super heavy MTB hubs. then he put armadillos with a flat prevention strip UNDER the tire, and some flat-resistant tubes. and then topped it off with slime.
he didn't do it for flat prevention, he did it so that when he put his deep ritchey carbon wheels on for race day, he was ripping fast.
i personally would rather enjoy all the miles, not just the race miles, but he was on a different level.
