scored some 9 speed ultegra shifters for free today. right lever feels a little funkey but everything works and rde the doublecross home from work today with them.

also scored a 10 speed ultegra rear der that needed jockey wheels, just so happen to have a 9 speed lx der that donated said jockey wheels.

is there a 9 speed cross biek cru?

that dynamo hub is super cheap, even the regular price is cheaper than the shimano or sram hubs are at cost... i might just have to get one...

this means they are clearing out of those, because the new "super duper better or at par with everyone else" dynamo hubs are coming soon

The ones they promised months ago

not sure anyone cares, but I'm fucking stoked: I got a scrap metal guy who comes around and drops off 10 speeds for me... so far I've traded him some scrap copper for a white womens Peugeot Iseran and a copper womens Raleigh Sprite. these will be excellent flippers come spring, and this dude is just gonna keep bringing bikes to my house. stoked!

Any crankset will shift smoothly with Shimano rings and a decent chain.

Picked up a red continuum complete minus wheels (most of the build is pretty budget, but saves me a ton of hassle and it's all passable stuff. ck headset is nice but it's blue ugh. but he also threw in a cf fork too) for $250. Might not be the hugest score, but I've been wanting one of these since I saw it in the store on a trip to new york like a year and a half or two ago. it's a little big, but with a 90 stem the reach feels fine.

i find the sram stuff to shift pretty nice, not as snappy as the new shimano with the super rigid hollow chainrings but nothing i would notice while riding.

triples also ride like shit, fuck a constantly fucked up chainline. fuck it right in the ass.

wtf? chainline is fucked up for dumb-dumbs that think they actually have 27 or 30 or whatever usable gears, but if you use outer with outer 5, inner with inner 5, middle with middle 7 or 8, you'll get better chainlines than a compact double. friction shifting with triples ftw.

thats too much shifting. you only need two chain rings up front. one for up, and one for down.

you should try a 4th chain ring so you can have even more unusable gears.

friction triple on my touring/road bike and indexed triples on my mountain bikes. i don't own a bike without a triple.

I get why people say stuff like this, but my triple bike has bar-end shifters, 50-39-30, and does double duty hauling a kiddie trailer. the kiddie does not appreciate out-of-the-saddle pedaling as it makes the ride very bouncy. When I'm spinning up the hill in the granny, I almost always at one point think what a nice thing it is to have the granny on there, and how well it works for its purpose.

They've been around forever, you use a splined rear cog as the stump-puller.

compact + mtb cassette gives you lower gearing than a roadie triple.

any more excuses?

it doesn't give you lower gears than a triple + mountain cassette?

you get all the advantages of standard double so your gear ratios can be closer spaced giving you more optimal spinning, plus you have a bailout gear?

i really think this constant lowering of gear ratios is just another symptom of the dumbing down and increasing laziness of the world. i remember when 28t was the most anyone really ever had on a 26" bike, and we weren't complaining! i remember when 34t cogs came out, for HYBRIDS!!! people just keep trying to make everything easier to the point where they don't have to put out much effort at all. unless you are irreversibly handicapped in some way that would require you to push a smaller gear than what is currently available, then these smaller gear shenannigans are pathetic\

in defense of the stupid low mtb gears, when i rode in colorado on jeep trails, there was times when i i was in the granniest of granny gears and still had trouble climbing. i think it was 22x34.

i have weak legs. everything i own is a double or single speed. i cant imagine going slower on a road bike without falling over than with a std double and 11-32 cassette.

Cannondale T400 in great shape for $110. My first not lugged steel bike.

In my size, flip or keep? It has front pannier braze ons and room for bigger tires than my Marinoni, but I couldn't stand to sell that. Roommates demand fewer bikes.
