I had no problem with climbing once I got a rhythm going with the one tempo late shuffle in the back.
Downhill twistys got real sketchy though.
But this was with a super c and bagman...
so respect to LADY GAGA doing the loaded one pannier thang!

also, you get used to pannier-weight real quick. i normally go to class with one-sided pannier attack, with about 1000 pages of textbooks plus a krypto and other detritus. you get used to balancing in no time, but shit can squirrel madstyle when you're doing legit climbs

this is exactly what i do for school and like you said, it doesn't take long to get used to. it was crazy windy last week and i did notice that it felt super for the front end of my bike. not sure if there is any connection, though.

Lights, fenders, action!

Need I say more than "Xtracycle"?

If and when my commute gets longer, I may switch to wool (lycra?? fuck that shit!). Yellow raincoat as appropriate, helmet 24/7, lights on at dusk, or in foggy/overcast conditions.

I don't think I'm fred. 90's Japanese steel road bike, risers with XT triggers, CETMA rack, Speedez, and helmet. Big red backpack when needed, otherwise I just strap something to the rack to carry tools and work clothes. I did go from 23 to 25c tires, and I might possibly go from an 11-23 cassette to 12-25. The bike is also dirty as fuck, needing to be washed like 2 months ago.

Fred?

When I first riding my fixed gear on road rides, I was hipster fred as fuck. Fenders x brakeless x MTB shoes x hairy legs x bullhorns x no hamlet x t-shirt instead of jersey collabo. A weird combination of danger, practicality and dorkiness.

I see older guys all over the south side riding ancient road bikes with stem heights Grant Petersen would raise an eye at and the bars flipped and raised so that the drops are parallel to the ground and the brakes are facing the front of the bike. This strikes me as the height of fredliness and I hope I can earn the right one day to roll this way.

that's the fixed gear of homeless bums. one bum did it and the others thought it was cool and now they all do it. go for it, if you want to be part of the in crowd.

This guy tried to out commute me this morning. He passed me spinning like 220 going like 15. I took the picture and passed him easily because I know how to use the gears on my bike to greater effect than he does.
Dude's faf though:

Definitely seeing it more with regular guys lately. I think the Major Taylor trail is ground zero, like one guy picked it up from a bum and then all the other guys who ride crusty bikes they dragged out of their garages because their wives were nagging them about their cholesterol also thought it was a good idea.

commuted behind a badass nishiki today. mixte (but not super shitty cuz real der hanger, not "claw" style) with a IGH rear and generator front. fenders and rear rack with ortliebs. rider was a woman in her 40s with way oversized burley rain jacket, lace-up shimano shoes, and the SPDs which have plastic platforms on one half.

me, i was on my basket bike triathlon special. i think i am in love with 48-38 rings, 650c wheels, 12-25 cassette, and friction DTs. and it even turns out that my front raceblade fender works well enough on the smaller wheel

wooohooooo

Go figure... it's because the bikes are built like 8 miles away from where our course was.

Having a friend who works at BikeFriday, I gotta say, their management/owners may be the ultimate in Freditude. Examples to come after I see him again... my caffeine-deprived brain isn't fully functioning yet.
