Your daily driver should start out as something nice, and then as you slowly destroy it it should turn into a shithouse yolomobile. Starting out with a shithouse parts bin build on a bike you plan to spend a significant amount of time riding is going at it exactly backwards.

I get around town either on an Xtracycle with an improvised sofa on the back or a 2010 Crosscheck with 9sp Dura Ace brake/shift levers, misaligned Longboards, and a Fizik Volta saddle.

I had a baller commute setup for like a few months when my custom track bike* was new, but then BLAMMO Chicago winter messed it up real good.

Y'all are out to lunch, thumb shifters are bogus. Shimano rapid fires are so cheap it's silly to use anything else unless it's a parts bin yolomobile or you're curating some monstrosity for Instagram likes.

yeah 10/11-speed rapidfires are fucking awesome, and way cheaper than any of the modern barend adapters

9-speed is kinda the worst of all worlds though and haven't aged well

old 8-speed indexed Suntour XC thumbies are pretty fantastic though, and their contemporary under-bar shifters were crap

Literally the only portion of the drivetrain I paid money for is the chain. The point was to invest as little money as possible into the bike I was leaving in a homeless camp-adjacent bike rack for 8-10 hours per day, so when I couldn't revive the 20-year-old Shimano shifters, the rusty Suntour Power Ratchet shifters I pulled from an abandoned bike were perfect.

I held onto some thumb ratchet shifters for ages but never used them, they're in someone else's parts bin now.

My first indexed shifters were 7sp 200GS push-push underbar ones. sludgy.

I have an old 8sp XT trigger that is still super crisp and slop free, paired with an alivio shadow for 1x8 on the shopper. My Tikit has a sunrace 8sp that I bought on close out for a couple of bucks, it's surprisingly great, and can downshift all but one cog in a single push. orders of magnitude better than the worn out gummy gripshift I replaced, even with a shagged microshift RD.

My tarckyon has the 7sp XT thumbie I bought a few years ago set to friction and I love them a lot.

I have a battery powered pump that cuts off at the desired pressure. I carry it when I take the moto off road so I can adjust pressure for on and off road. Sure it's bigger and heavier than a mini pump but its also super fast and was only like $45. Or a job that lets you keep your bike inside in an area that doesn't require locking it. I firmly believe that your commuter should be pretty much your best sensible bike since you ride it at least 10 times a week. for me that's about 10 times more than i ride any other bike most weeks.

My daily rider doesn't just go to work, where I keep it indoors. I go to lunch, the grocery store, run errands, see a movie, out to dinner, etc.

That said, parts bin doesn't need to be garbage parts.

I'm heading into this territory now. Sick of spending so much time on a gaspipe frame.

I also have very little social life outside of hanging out with my neighbors so i basically ride to work, ride to pick up a 6 pack then ride home. There's a killer produce store at the end of my street where we do the bulk of our shopping and we're really just too broke to go do much luxuries. But i've been working in bikes for long enough before i had real financial responsibilities that my fleet is pretty tight and i can hunt and/or gather to work and back err day.
would totally ride my parts in free musa 90s mtb more if i still did fun stuff around town all the time.

I know it's actually not funny but it's fucking funny to me anytime you see a video of someone's bar/stem/steerer breaking where as it separates from the rest of the bike you can watch them still try to control the bike with the now disconnected bars. We would all do it obviously but it's hilarious to see that while the bars have disconnected from the bike your brain can't disconnect from the idea of what bars do.

Those bars are an interesting idea. Aero AF, and possibly quicker/more concenient to swich hand positions than normal. The shit hits the fan when the meachanism fails.

I'm not riding bars that have to be reconfigured into the "braking position". Sure, let me just take this intermediary step before I can make my goddamn bike stop hurtling through the spacetime continum.

you'd have to do a pushup while braking to get any real purchase in aero position wait why are we even arguing this these bars are the kind of thing that gets invented every six weeks and then disappears for a decade only to show up on some really profoundly puzzling Craigslist advert

The same applies to normal aero bars. If anything the transition is less sketchy on these things... as long as the mechanism works well, which is the obvious elephant in the room.
Was this thing really invented before? I've never seen it.

WHY THE FUCK does Q (or Shimano most of the time) not stock replacement rings for EVERY FUCKING 2x10 Shimano crankset?

Shimano wrote:

I know I'm a broken record on this but Shimano's mythical front shifting is overrated and has lead to so much unneeded fuckery with chainring "standards" it's just absurd. How about you fuckers just stick with actual existing bolt patterns and ring/spider interfaces rather than just completely making shit up as you go?

Even at euroland prices a crankset is WAY more than the ring when it can occasionally be ordered from Shimano USA (it's one of their VERY cheaply made rings). I'm more enraged at their deliberate fuckery when it comes to the forging/machining of the tabs on the spider that prevent using any other available part without substantial amounts of wasted time in the back with a file.

Also if the problem can't be solved in 24-48 hours with a part from Q or Shimano USA it's doing the customer a disservice, not just making my life difficult.

This is one problem Sram and Race Face don't have. Even FSA is less problematic. Only that idiotic 3 bolt chainring is a real issue.
