Remind me, did they ever get all the Magnic lights shipped? I think the Reelights are uglyaf but seems like the mounting situation may be more convenient.

That doesn't even make sense. Are they saying they need someone to throw them some cash for a legal/patent defense? If yes why don't they come out and say it? Why don't they say how they want to pay it back? Do they really think kickstarter is the right place to look for investors/saviours? Are these people complete idiots?

I finally received my Magnic lights a few months ago.
Mounted the new IC version taillight on one side and the original on the other. Not very easy to compare when you're riding the bike at normal speeds. I should've asked a friend to ride it around while I followed behind.
Standlight is okay but not super bright like a typical dynamo standlight such as the Secula. I noticed that the standlight isn't constant either, from the corner of your eye you can detect that it is (PWM) flashing rapidly right around the "flicker fusion threshold". The mode-change-wheel-spin-method is extremely confusing. I watched the video at least 10 times and futzed with it for awhile before I was able to get it in the mode I think I want. Even when the bike is in the stand it is hard to tell what mode you are in because you need to charge up the supercaps for a couple minutes.
Also interesting, I noticed that the eddy currents from two Magnic lights do introduce a detectable drag on the wheel like a real dynamo hub. I remember trying to test this a few years ago with a single original on the bike stand by measuring how long the wheel spun freely. At the time I couldn't detect any drag. For some reason the new + old Magnics on one wheel presents a very obvious drag in the bike stand.

I ended up taking both Magnic lights off the Rawland Stag while I get it set up with a Secula on the fender. Not sure if I will put them back on once I'm done with my overhaul. Might also put them on another bike or sell.
I think I like the idea of the Magnic lights for the general public more than I like them on my own bikes that already have a dynamo hub.

I am still halfway interested in the eddy current lights because they should work with my fat bike. The 135mm dynamo hub is still wayyy too many dollars for me (though I just noticed that PW is closing them out for ~$250. Still way too much!). But yeah LED dynamo lights still appear to be worlds better than the eddy lights.

So, the Shimano 6V 3W dyno hubs, the LX-ish level with the funny asymm hub shells, those are OK?

So I have had one of these sitting around for like 8 months and it seems silly to not use it. Its gonna go on my daily commuter which gets locked up outside all day at work.
A) will sitting in the rain/snow/etc 8 hours a day kill it?
B) whats a cheapo light to pair with it for the winter, I'll probably spring for something nicer after the winter.

Alright, so Chrimbus list goes: shimano N80 dyno hub, IQ Cyo headlight, Secula rear light. Reasonable starting point, I think.

@john I commuted Iowa with one of those wheels no problem last year, though I was bringing the bike inside during the day. I have a feeling that it would be fine outside though.

Love that wheel so much you guys. So cheap, so true, so dyno

I have one of the cheapest, smallest B&M light, the Avy, on my family bike which does not get a lot of night riding. Though it's rated at just 30 lux, it's pretty good for city riding. The beam is bright and has a nice long throw, but is very narrow (compared to my Cyo).

The Cyo Premium is absolutely much better, but the Avy is way ahead of 90% of standard American design lamps. The Eyc is a bit more money and has more lux, but I had no personal experience.

On another note, I'm thinking I should just buy one of those wheels as a spare. I'm starting to get worried about my SP as it closes in on 8,000 all-weather miles. No signs of trouble, but you know.

Thanks y'all. If I don't kill the wheel in one winter I'll get a nicer light for it, if I do I'll go big on a wheel and light.

Peter White the best place to get one of those B&M lights?

If you are ordering front and rear lights, ordering from Germany is usually cheaper to about the same. Plus you can stock up on Shimano/Schwalbe stuff when you order your lights. If you just want one light it might be easier just to order from PW.

Cyo Premium from PW is $98 plus shipping from PW
Cyo Premium from bike-discount.de is about $72 shipped

i know ive posted about this before but i just ordered one of these through the shop

it's a rim/bottle dynamo that they claim has less drag than other rim/bottle dynamos and will work well with the modern lights.

somewhat related:
here's a bottle dynamo review in german
http://fahrradzukunft.de/18/labortest-felgenlaeuferdynamos/

why a bottle dynamo? because i already have non-dynamo wheels built.

Well keep us posted on that mig. For me the thing that always freaks me out about bottles is the thought that they would perform worst in the conditions where you really need light---rain/ snow/ slush.

this
if/when i get it to work and test it this will come into consideration. it costs about 60% of a son hub with 1 mount. additional mounts are ~40E(!!!)(which is crazy) and translation was difficult to figure out which one i would need. some people have had FBs kludge them custom mounts which dont look elegant at all (can't find the photo).

My favorite thing about Aaron is that he pulls off whatever bike shop sticker is on your bike, and puts a sticker for his repair shop in its place.

I'm interested to know if any other guys have been approached by him for unprompted sexytimes?
Even though we aren't friends on FB and have only met IRL 1-2 times he has FB messaged me on two occasions about weird grab-ass questions. Not sure if he thinks I am someone else but feels kinda creepy. Not sure if I'm completely misinterpreting the messages but his predatory history isn't reassuring.
I think I finally blocked him after the second vague but playful/sexy message. It's a bummer because I kinda enjoyed attending his holiday cargo bike rides and now I feel weird about any possible confrontation about not responding.

Maybe we could trade some parts if you want anything out of my parts bin.

I should probably glue it directly to the toggle switch this time.

I wonder if you could sell the leftovers to that guy on one of the google groups (650b? rCog?). He was looking for partially destroyed (but functional) dynamo lights for a project.

it looks really high quality. i got the "trekking" version so the cap is grey (instead of red). its pretty light for what it is and it will turn off when not connected/switched on. so, if your light is off and the dynamo is pressed against the rim there will be minimal resistance. in fact, i did this with a bike in the stand.

the mount is BULLSHIT. 30E for this nicely machined piece of perforated aluminum which will fit the fork but will not fit the rear stay. There are 3 versions of the mount available - i wasnt sure which i was going to do at first - I got the medium which fits a standard road fork (as vague as that sounds). The small will probably fit a seat stay and a large will probably fit a suspension fork. this problem varying sizes could be solved by perforating a big piece and then having your LBS cut off the unneeded part. Or heck, designing a universal/better mount.

I will take some photos and collect all these little reviews for the "reviews" thread.
